Java Technology The Java 2 Platform provides robust end-to-end solutions for networked applications as well as a trusted standard for embedded applications. It includes three editions: J2EE, J2SE and J2ME. The Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) defines the standard for developing multitier enterprise applications. J2EE simplifies enterprise applications by basing them on standardized, modular components, by providing a complete set of services to those components, and by handling many details of application behavior automatically, without complex programming. The Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition, provides "Write Once, Run Anywhere" portability, JDBC API for database access, CORBA technology for interaction with existing enterprise resources, and a security model that protects data even in internet applications, full support for Enterprise JavaBeans components, Java Servlets API, JavaServer Pages and XML technology. The J2EE standard includes complete specifications and compliance tests to ensure portability of applications across the wide range of existing enterprise systems capable of supporting J2EE. With simplicity, portability, scalability and legacy integration, J2EE is the platform for enterprise solutions. The Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition is at the core of Java technology and is the premier solution for rapidly developing and deploying mission-critical, enterprise applications. Version 1.4 builds upon Java technology's cross-platform support and robust security model with new features and functionality, enhanced performance and scalability, and improved reliability and serviceability. Version 1.4 advances rich client application development and provides the foundation for standards-based, interoperable Web services. The Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition is available on every major computing platform including the SolarisTM Operating Environment, Linux, HP-UX, AIX, Tru64 Unix, Windows, MacOS X and many others. The JavaTM 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) is the Java platform for consumer and embedded devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, TV set-top boxes, in-vehicle telematics systems, and a broad range of embedded devices. The J2ME platform delivers the power and benefits of Java technology tailored for consumer and embedded devices — including a flexible user interface, robust security model, broad range of built-in network protocols, and support for networked and disconnected applications. With J2ME, applications are written once for a wide range of devices, are downloaded dynamically, and leverage each device's native capabilities. The J2ME platform is deployed on millions of devices from mobile phones, to PDAs, to automotive devices.
