What is Internet? The Internet is a network of computers. It connects computers of different architecture, running on different operating systems, in different geographical areas, containing different languages and a massive volume of information. Anyone can be a part of the internet by connecting their computer to the internet or using a computer connected to the internet. The Internet is how computers from different geographical areas are connected together. It is a concept rather than an entity. The concept is important and a revolution because it changed the way information is stored, distributed, and retrieved. It revolutionized the amount of information available, when it is available and to whom and the way it is retrieved. The quality and content of the information is another matter. Information is exchanged and retrieved using different protocols like Telnet, FTP, HTTP etc. Telnet allows the connection to and use of UNIX computers. FTP allows one to store and retrieve files from a remote computer. Protocol defines how computers should communicate. For example, how computers address one another, how to make sure the information has reached its destination, who should talk, who should listen and how to minimize the disturbances and alterations to the data during the transmission. The Internet uses Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) to link computers. It is designed to link networks rather than computers. This allows each individual network to be managed separately. Next>
